Every summer we take a trip to beautiful Whitefish, Montana. It's part work (for Jon) and all fun (for me). When I ended up having an emergency c-section at 23 weeks, the thought of going on a carefree vacation just rubbed me the wrong way. How could I possibly relax or enjoy my time when my little one was fighting for his life in the hospital?
As the months went by and Jack got more strong, my family convinced me that it would be good to get away, even if it was very hard emotionally to do so. Just to take a break, sleep, and relax was their reasoning. So I decided to throw caution to the wind and head to Whitefish for 24 hours, industrial-size, hospital-grade breast pump in tow. All the preemie moms know what I'm talking about!
Grams and Cheeks would be there to hold Jack and to visit him. I would call in every few hours to make sure everything was OK. Jack was in his "feeding and growing" stage, with a period of no surgeries. It was then or never for me to go and I'm so glad I did.
Off I went. That day away ended up being the only time I left the town where Jack's NICU was. I never returned home (which is 2 hours away) during the whole 4 months.
