Drink?

Something happened the other day as I was feeding Jack. Something that has never happened before.

He asked for a drink.

He was sitting in his highchair, eating dinner in relative silence. Me and him just together before daddy got home. I had just given him a spoonful of food when I heard "dink?" in a small voice from his little mouth. I froze and thought "did I just hear that?" I looked over at him and he was staring at his little cup of water. I proceeded to offer him a squeeze of water out of that pediatric feeding cup (kind of like squeezing liquid out of a juice cup, through a small straw). He took a few sips and was satisfied. This in itself is a big deal. The fact that Jack will open his mouth up for water is something very new to us.

So I chalked it up to coincidence, but after a few more bites of food, I heard it again, "dink?" And I offered him his cup. He took more drinks.

When Jon got home, I relayed the story and we both realized that this was the first time in which Jack actually asked us for something - and a drink for that matter! He has never verbalized a want so clearly to us.

I can't even imagine what that must have been like for him. To be able to communicate, to ask for something he wants. He has the world at his finger tips and all he needs to do is learn to ask.
