Letter to the Editor

Here is our letter to the editor that appeared a week or so ago in the Missoulian. It was under the "On a Positive Note" section. Words can't really express how thankful we are for the care Jack received in the NICU, but we tried to publicly commend Jack's caregivers through this letter.

We would like to publicly commend the superb medical staff at the Community Medical Center neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Our son, Jack, was born almost four months premature back in May, and because of their fine work, we were finally able to bring him home early this month.

We thank Jack’s primary neonatologist, Dr. Jan Hiller, the NICU’s other neonatologist, Dr. Mark Kaneta, and the many surgeons for their day-to-day and long term plans of care, and their careful and personal approach to our boy’s medical needs. We are also grateful for the dozens of nurses who were responsible for Jack’s minute-by-minute care. Many of them went above and beyond the call of duty by making us feel more at ease and more welcome during Jack’s four month stay. All of the medical professionals work long hours and must be on alert for all kinds of emergencies. They deserve a huge pat on the back.

We’d also like to thank the Ronald McDonald House for their hospitality during a three week period when we needed a place to stay. The House is such a great resource for families with children in the hospital.

The Community NICU is not just a benefit to Missoula – it’s an asset for Western Montana. We thank them all for working miracles for our boy.
